A Violent Society (media violence) essays

A Violent Society (media violence) essays The American society, it seems, is often depicted as violence portrayed at its best. As a people we obviously do not condone or accept this form of action yet we know it is among us. Everyday we see or hear about an evil occurring, whether it is a hit and run, a robbery, or a murder. Because of the consistency of these events in our country, many people have sought to answer the question, Why? Why do people become so infatuated with wrong doing that they perform such violent crimes? Some have come to believe that our own entertainment industry is at fault. More often than not, in television and cinema there are themes and messages involving violence. Can these enjoyable experiences make us feel as if we need to act them out? I believe not. It seems that the average person who enjoys this entertainment may come to appreciate violence, yet still will never think of acting as a part of it. Although I will also suggest that violence on television can and has pursued those who already hav e the sort of behavior and mind-set to produce cruelty. Another question to ask is, when will the creators of this leisure activity take it to the point where it will create a desire to act out what we see and hear? First we heard about violence, then we got to see it, and now we get to control it in games. Is this far enough? Whats next? Some see this entertainment as simple pleasure, others can see it as a push to evil, and still others say it just shouldnt go any further. Everyday there becomes more and more violence in our entertainment. We see the new action-packed good guy bad guy T.V. show or we buy tickets to the latest horror film. Our minds are already set that anything with immoral scenes has got to be good. Some then begin to enjoy crime filled content so much that theyll never miss anything new. Yet, when they watch the news alert on the latest murder. They become just as sympathetic and dis ...

The Marketing Functions Of Euro Disney Tourism Essays

The Marketing Functions Of Euro Disney Tourism Essays The Marketing Functions Of Euro Disney Tourism Essay The Marketing Functions Of Euro Disney Tourism Essay Introduction The Walt Disney s nucleus concern country is Amusement and subject Parkss. Organization started concern in 1955 with an 80-acre Park in California US. Currently they have theme Parkss in US, Tokyo and France. Euro Disneyland was one of their biggest undertakings in 1990 s ; the venture was one of the American attempts to spread out their concern in foreign states. Even though Walt Disney s first foreign venture in Tokyo was a success, their following enlargement of concern in foreign dirt Euro Disney became a failure. Aim of this papers is to analyze selling direction and its function in the concern at Euro Disney. Throughout the papers it focuses on current selling map and identifies important issues which has caused notable bead in the public presentation of Euro Disney and analyses basicss of consumer market behavior and the usage of marketing construct to get the better of the state of affairs. Euro Disney Marketing Functions Selling researchA Since Tokyo Disneyland became an blink of an eye hit, Walt Disney believed they gained important cognition and experience in foreign ventures ; therefore they initiated to seek for a site for the following subject park. The choice was Paris for many grounds. France had a dramatic transit web because of its big population. The Walt Disney Company executives believed since Tokyo Disneyland and Paris was located in about the same latitude and shared a similar cold-weather clime that they would be able operate successfully. Their research was aimed at Europe because Disney movies used to be celebrated than in the United States. Because of this Disney amusement was celebrated among European witnesss. Selling planningA SWOT Analysis Merchandise developmentA Development of Euro Disney was chiefly focused on non to reiterating two errors that they did during past ventures, i.e. Leting other constitutions to open hotels in environing country of the subject park As happened in Orlando, Florida, where merely 14 % of the hotels owned by Disney. Leting another company to have the subject park Consequently, Walt Disney bought land more than they truly need and reinforced office composite, corporate park, places, shopping promenades and flats Ad and gross revenues publicity Euro Disneyland did selling to stress that it is an absolute holiday finish where households can remain for hebdomad s clip. They promoted Euro Disney as a topographic point where Gallic invitee could see and remain for a long continuance. Their chief scheme of selling was advancing the subject park by following American Style. Furthermore they used small show window to market what adventures invitees could execute and used characters to explicate what they could see inside the park. All the mark boards inside the park were themed with Plagiarists of Caribbean manner and hallmark was Smile a batch . To accomplish more guest attractive force into the park, Euro Disney organized events such as Halloween . Law monetary value tickets were sold after 5pm specifically aiming Parisians, another selling maneuver was to give decreases to school groups and people below 25 and over 60. Selling and distributionA The handiness to the location of euro Disney Land has been made easier by location itself, where it s merely 20 stat mis off from centre of Paris and besides it s situated between Orly airdromes and Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle international airdrome. Besides the site is connected with Gallic railroad regional express where it s connected with the Paris tube system. On the gap twenty-four hours itself the direct rail nexus to Great Britain via the English Channel wade the tract to countless extra possible invitees. A Public dealingss The employees with trilingual capablenesss were given more prominence in enlisting of staff, since Disney hoped to pull visitants from all over Europe. These employees were given particular human resource preparation to engraft the Have a nice twenty-four hours outlook and to smile the Disney Smile . Employees were besides instructed to adhere to the Disney Look to be in line with the Disney civilization. Analysis of the basicss of consumer behavior The purchasing procedure There are four types of purchasing behaviour: Disney Europe expected a assortment seeking purchasing behaviour from the client, as they offered a assortment of merchandises within the subject park. Ranging from subject park drives, interaction with Disney characters, nutrient, drinks, Disney merchandize and many more. Root cause Analysis The scheme that Disney wanted to implement was the same tested and tried theoretical account that they had adopted in the Unites provinces and Tokyo. However the root causes for their failure was besides this scheme which failed to factor in the socio cultural differences of the Gallic and Europeans and their over ambitious programs to develop the site plus their fiscal construction itself. Strategy mismatch at Euro Disney The root cause of the blooper that Disney made in France was that they perceived that their subject park was a monopoly due to its size a monopoly is described in literature is described as a individual provider with no challengers and high barriers to entry.A When comparing Disney to the other subject Parkss that were in being at the clip it s apparent that all of them were little and less known than the celebrated Disney trade name. Besides it was really hard for an investor to come up with a park of the same size and quality due to the high cost involved. Therefore Disney s premise about the monopolistic place could non be faulted. Disney was besides concentrating on tourers who would pass several yearss at the park in order to see the full park, which would imply gross from their hotels, nutrient and ware ; . Euro Disney due to their perceptual experience of their park being a monopoly besides priced themselves at a premium, which was more expensive even compared to the tickets for their locales in America. It was besides discovered that consumers were non acting in the mode expected for a monopolistic market. However what transpired was that the Gallic proverb it as a twenty-four hours finish which made Disney compete with many other smaller subject Parkss scattered around France. Euro Disney besides miscalculated the per-capita disbursement of visitants to the park. It was assumed by them that clients would pass every bit much as Americans and Nipponese, nevertheless Gallic visitants spent about 12 % less than their counterparties. Cultural Issues Disney failed to place the being of cultural differences in Europe ensuing in them doing the undermentioned errors ; Disney executives thought that Europeans had the same vacation forms as Americans who spent their money on several short vacation flings, whereas the Europeans and French were more likely to distribute their money and take a few longer interruptions. The company besides miscalculated the eating wonts of the European visitants where they thought they would emulate the Americans by holding a speedy repast instead than a sit down repast at the appointive clip accompanied with vino and spirits. This caused a immense tumult as the Gallic were accustomed to taking a glass of vino with a repast. The employees who were preponderantly Gallic were expected to move in a mode that was contradictory to their societal imposts. The Disney Company expected their employees to adhere to a rigorous 13 page guideline which imposed a good scrubbed American expression. This did non sit really good with the employees who preferred their individuality. Marketing scheme mismatch The subject park was marketed as a complete holiday finish that could be occupied by invitees for a hebdomad. This scheme boasts typical American manner largeness and extravagancy. Where they have wholly alienated the emotional facet of it by pretermiting to emphasis on the particular memorable experience the household could hold. This clearly shows that the company did non see the positions of the Europeans when developing their schemes. Euro Disney besides did non see the nearing recession which tumbled the Gallic existent estate market which mostly negated their scheme of developing belongings and selling it to possible purchasers ; it besides shrunk the European and French disposable income so that households thought twice before taking a dearly-won holiday at Euro Disney. Operational Strategy Mismatch Euro Disney encountered several operational mismatches during its early being some of which are still in being today such as the right degree of staffing at the subject park, it was assumed that Monday would be a light twenty-four hours for invitees and Friday would be heavy but the contrary was true. They besides miscalculated the installations available for parking, hotel cheque out places, hapless direction of the crowds ( Large waiting lines, eating house seating capacity ) Strategic Action Plan for Disney Euro Seven P s of Euro Disney Merchandise Happiness Topographic point Euro Disney Park Promotion Powerful and widely known trade name name The sum of promotion generated by the undertaking Monetary value Determined by benchmarking those of other Disney Parkss Peoples All the dramatis personae members, current and old clients Physical environment Theme park, hotel, retail composites and recreational installations Procedure The procedure by which the merchandise felicity and satisfaction is delivered to clients Recommendation and decision By analysing the above facts, there are two chief aims that Euro Disney Co will see ; those are to get the better of their high debt incurred along the manner of its operations and to carry through the spread of the cultural mismatch. Disney ventures in Europe loss USD 900 million for the first fiscal twelvemonth, after 3 months from the first fiscal twelvemonth Disney loss sum of 1.3 billion. Therefore to get the better of these debts the undermentioned schemes and tactics are recommended ; Publishing of portions to the borrowers to put off against the outstanding debts. Rights issue to the bing portion holders in order to raise financess to retrieve the company debts. Retrenchment of employees. Reposition the trade name to reflect its propinquity to Paris. Price tax write-offs on entryway fee and hotel monetary values on particular promotional periods, and on different usage sections such as schools, age and etc. Offer all inclusive bundles which include conveyance, nutrient and adjustment to pull budget tourers. Design particular festivals aimed at different seasons of the twelvemonth such as Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter this will lure visitants to the park several times a twelvemonth to hold a different experience. ( Increase Consumption ) Introduce activities such as golf, tennis etc to provide to the different sections of visitants. Revamping of the manner it was marketed to be a household oriented holiday foregrounding the emotional facet of it. Expand the market to other untapped markets such as the Middle East and Afric A better mechanism to buoy up up the current client service in order to pull more clients to the concern. By accomplishing the program mentioned above we are confident that the euro Disney operation can be made profitable successful.

Write up one to two pages about one of the ideas that you found most Essay

Write up one to two pages about one of the ideas that you found most interesting in Smelser and Reed, p. 185-253 - Essay Example Additionally, size in the context of organizations has effects that directly have an effect on the efficiency and the structure. It is captivating that Smelser and John perceive the size of an organization to be affected and determined by various aspects including activities distribution in time and space. The distribution of activities in time and space has a major effect on the organization, which influence the decisions made to achieve the desired outcome. Interestingly, Smelser and John indicate that greater size is associated with greater complexity and formalization; hence, they believe that size carries not only the definition of how large or small an organization is, but also the variations in the organization’s authoritative hierarchy and culture. The authors further outline the cautions necessary in handling effects associated with size including developments such as outsourcing, specializations, and virtual organization. Consequently, it is interesting that the size of an organization is linked to every other aspect of economies of scale and the dissemination of activities in time and

Ichabod Crane and Abraham Van Brunt Essay Example for Free

Ichabod Crane and Abraham Van Brunt Essay In the short story of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow you will find two very different men, Ichabod Crane and Abraham Van Brunt, competing against each other for but one woman’s hand in marriage, Katrina Van Tassel. Katrina Van Tassel was a ravishing young lady of only eighteen and the only child of a very wealthy farmer named Baltus Van Tassel. Her father paid little attention to her other than to be proud of her good doings when they were praised by others. Because of her beauty, along with the wealth of her father, Katrina had the interest of many men. Although these men were driven away in defeat by a man named Abraham Van Brunt, whom also had a strong interest in Katrina. Abraham Van Brunt, also known as Brom Brunt, was tall and extremely hansom with dark curly hair. He was described as muscular and strong, thus he was given the nick name Brom Bones by the townspeople. Brom was known for his rambunctious personality, his love for pranks, and his admirable great skills on horseback. He was known as the â€Å"village hero.† He wanted Katrina’s hand in marriage, not because he loved her, but because he was determined to inherit the wealth of her father Baltus. Brom managed to scare off all the other suitors of Katrina with violence and physical confrontation. He had no competition! That is until Ichabod Crane came along. Ichabod Crane was a shy school teacher who had traveled from his home state of Connecticut to Sleepy Hollow, New York. He came to teach the children about the area. He was known to be a strict teacher, but not cruel. Ichabod was described as a lanky man; tall and thin with big hands and feet and also a rather large nose. He was said to be an awkward n clumsy man. Although he was a rather thin man, he was capable of eating plenty and was often looking forward to do so. He was an extremely superstitious man, so much that he believed in every myth, legend, and tall tale to be truth. This resulted in him easily being scared of anything that reminded him of ghost, goblins, witches, demons, etc. Despite his awkwardness, Crane was a very sociable man. I guess he had to be considering the fact that he would live at the homes of the townspeople, a different one every week. He was said to be a kind man. He would sometimes walk his students home from school, he would play with some of the bigger kids, and he would even help farmers with all of their farming duties. Many women took a liking to Ichabod because he was known to be kind and gentlemanlike. Also, he loved to sing and he had a beautiful voice and the ladies loved it! In fact, his voice was so beautiful that he also taught the townspeople to sing and also led the choir at the village’s church. Katrina was a student of Ichabod. When he had first met her, like many others, he was mesmerized by her beauty. Although it wasn’t until he had met her father and seen her farmhouse that he felt he was in love with her. To me it seemed as if he had just fallen in love with the idea of inheriting her father’s wealth, but the story says he was in love with her and wanted her heart, not just her wealth. Of course, this didn’t sit well with Brom Brunt at all, and he would try to chase Ichabod off. But Brom couldn’t do it in his usual way of violence, because Ichabod had a way of avoiding physical confrontation with him. So instead, Brom would use his second best skill, pranks! Knowing that Crane was a superstitious man who was easily scared, Brom would begin to taunt and tease him with scary stories, including the town’s most famous one, the legend of the headless horseman. This would eventually mark the end of Ichabod Crane. The story tells that one night after attending a party held at the Van Tassel home, when Ichabod was walking home, he had an encounter with what seemed to be the headless horseman. He was never to be seen again. Some believed that it was actually the headless horseman himself who had taken the life of Ichabod, but others believed that is was just Brom Bones in costume out to get what he wanted, Crane gone! As you can see, in comparison, these two men were very different from each other. Quite the opposite I’d say. The only thing that they shared a common ground with each other would be their desire for the Katrina Van Tassel and her inheritance. Even then, they would attempt to woo her in very different ways, Crane with his songs and his stories of superstitions, and Brom with his violence and strength. Besides the way these men look, their personalities and even their interests and talents were very different. I’d say Brom Bones was a man of good looks and brawn but rather rowdy, rude, and perhaps cruel. While Ichabod was a sensitive man with a kind heart and although he was lanky and awkward looking he was a gentleman with good social skills.

Comparison of East and West African food and the influence they had in

This paper will compare and contrast the different eating habits and examine the cultural dining of West Africa to East Africa. Africans like most of the world outside of American and London aren’t fanatical on fast food even though it is becoming more popular most people eat at home or at relatives or friends home. Even Africans living outside of Africa love to cook rather than dine out in most cases. This report was based on interviews from Africans who grew up in traditional African homes in Africa. All references have been crossed checked and stories verified on how most African dishes are prepared, and their history. More research was done by the books listed, as well as other references such as internet sites. Most of this data has been collected over years of experience of living with Africans from both West and East Africa. It is custom when one person is cooking they do not just cook for themselves, or even their family but for anybody who might drop by unexpected. Big pots are used to cook and food is rarely wasted because the people here are very close and always welcomed to each other’s homes. That is what is the best part of being Africa, communities are still one, when one eats everybody eats. Throughout this paper Africans dishes consisting of: chicken, fish, goat, beef, shrimp, and even crab. As well as fruits such as: oranges, bananas, guava, mangos are very popular and will be listed. African vegetables are just like anywhere else carrots, peas, and corns as well as exotic roots that are hard to find in the states like cassava, efo, and cola nut. African cuisine combines traditional fruits and vegetables, meats and fish from the oceans that surrounds the continent, and a marinade of cultures, colonies, trade routes, and history. Africa cuisine is as broad as the continent, from dry desert, to tropical wetlands, plains, and jungle. The media has given Westerners the wrong impression of Africa, from the movies showing colonization to savages misrepresenting the birthplace of all man. African cuisine is on the rise in the U.S., due to the growing popularity as Africans bring the dishes of their country to family restaurants to this country. To an outsider of this culture it is impossible to categorize African food. I have even seen cooking shows call plantains (a starchy banana) a Cuban or Spaniard dish but it originated on both coast of Afr... ...de and remixed other culture recipes and used it for their own.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The most important lesson in this paper is to see how culture came from Africa, and that we are all the same. Learning about different cultures is vital for man kind to survive, many wars are fought because of ignorance. Even in Africa food is important and cherished. With this paper my appreciation of African food has increased, as well as my menu selection. I enjoy African food because there is not much diary in the typical African diet. References 1. Travelling: Culture and Travel

Why do people insist in taking their holidays in the same locations year after year? This is always something that puzzled me as surely the whole reason behind travelling is to experience different cultures and their unique lifestyles? Sure, you may have had a great time on your holiday to (insert destination! ) when you first visited five years ago but, does it surely the adrenalin fuelled excitement has started to wane with each passing year when you have visited? Of course you probably still haven't even done half of what is possible at your holiday hotspot but that still doesn't gauge the interest quite like going somewhere unique. Take for example your everyday life. If you have ever moved to a new location it can be an exciting time for some. There are endless possibilities of new things to see, people to meet and, daily excursion. But, over time this excitement erodes although you probably haven't done as much as you really could! There are so many things to learn from visiting new places that it would be a shame to go to the same location. You can see the pyramids of Gaza, the Taj Mahal, or the Great Barrier Reef. Sure, going to Disneyland is probably a great thrill but you're not going to learn about Arabic culture there! Travel is a valuable tool in educating oneself on other cultures and lifestyles. And, what's more, it will sure make the gifts you bring back for people more exciting. Those who like to lie on the beach all day and sunbathe would probably like to do just that. But for those of us interested in learning about other cultures, there's no excuse for not travelling elsewhere! Travel broadens the mind' Travel does broaden the mind. However it is what ‘travel' means to the individual. Is it is the consequence of travel where the true expansion is achieved. Travel opens a doorway for the individual to seek the experiences and be open to the absorption of those experiences. Allowing to take from those to build on and develop. These journeys could be far afield or a walk to the corner shop- Muslims praying to the West or the tired eyes of the lady passed in the street Each experience opening a spectrum of further questions. It is the travellers personal reflection, interpretation and conclusion that ‘broadens the mind'. Travel presents experiences of other lifestyles, cultures, values and convictions. Expansion is gained by personal deliberation reflected in their own lives. Travel teaches diversity. The value of that cannot fail but to broaden the mind. ravelling enables many people to broaden their minds in certain respects. When you travel you gain new ideas and experience new things. However you do not have to travel miles to expand your horizons, and there are many disadvantages associated with travelling. Travelling makes it possible to experience new cultures; for example, observing different religions and customs, even if it just means traipsing round an Indian mosque, or visiting an Egyptian temple. While travelling, you an learn new languages, which may increase your confidence. If you learn a few basic phrases, you are given the chance to interact with the native people. Also you are more likely to experience the friendliness of the locals because language barriers are broken. This may lead to prejudice ideas being destroyed. A new language gives a different outlook on life. Travel also teaches you independence, because it allows you to escape the familiar surroundings of home and stay in a strange or alien place. Just arranging travel and accommodation can give you new responsibilities. Often when people travel they leave everyday commodities behind and have to learn to cope without them. Improvising or making do without them teaches patience and determination, and when you return home you become more grateful for the things you left behind. Not only does travelling allow you to see new cultures, it also often allows you to learn the roots of your own cultures. Travelling enables you to become aware of differences in lifestyle – whether they are regional or national – and to learn how different people interact and generally what they base their ideas on. Travelling lets people explore their own customs and way of life, and appreciate their countries’ history and traditions. Travelling introduces new ideas that can change your opinions on different topics and help you to become more open minded about things you would normally disapprove of. Such as exploring different political situations in countries you visit. By experiencing life in different social systems or under different governments, you can see how successful they are and form intelligent opinions. Travelling an also make you more aware of other traditions and help you understand different views and perceptions that foreign people have. Our neighbours in France, a mere twenty-two miles from our shores live diverse lives from our selves, socially, politically and legally. By visiting new places you are introduced to new etiquette, which you may be expected to abide by. This provokes awareness in many people on the correct rules of behaviour in society and broadens the m ind. The opportunities of travel are expanding. Package holidays are becoming more popular. And travelling to new countries is being made more accessible, and cheaper. In the future there will be orbital hotels in space offering ‘out of this world’ holidays. Ordinary holidaymakers will be able to travel to space and back. How could travelling to a different planet not broaden the mind? Space travel could put a new perspective on life and change the way you think and the way you live your live. However, travelling has many disadvantages and it is possible to take the view that it does not broaden the mind. Travelling can be very expensive and you may have to be inconvenienced by having to get visas or a passport. Why would you want to go to all this bother when you are able to experience new cultures through media, such as television programmes, newspaper articles or the Internet? There are numerous travel programmes on the television and radio, and it is much easier and cheaper to see new places by this method. Also England is very international and there are many foreign people living and studying here. So you do not have to go abroad in order to learn new languages or see different traditions. An example of this is ‘China Town’ in London. Here in this bustling town are many Cantonese and Mandarin speaking people. There are a variety of restaurants offering a taste of the eastern culture. There are also many dangers associated with foreign cultures. There are the hazards of diseases and you may have to go to the trouble of getting injections and taking malaria tablets. You are relatively safe in England as there is no risk of wars or terrorist attacks. Some people could feel going abroad daunting because of the different laws and punishments for crimes. Also some might argue that there is no point in going abroad, as everywhere is becoming the same and homogenised. An example of this is the fact that in many countries there are ‘McDonalds’ restaurants situated everywhere. Moreover many countries’ cultures are modified to suit English tastes. So in fact you are not really experiencing the true way of life in that country. Also when you go travelling you often don’t meet people of new nationalities. As Laurence Sterne expressed it ‘ As an English man does not travel to see English men, I retired to my room’. Guests staying in many resorts are urged to remain in the safety of the complex of the hotel, and urged not to venture out, because of disturbing sights of poverty or fear of the unaltered world outside the hotel. Many tourists are reluctant to venture forth and so seldom see the real country, and its people, which they are visiting. However I feel that it is much easier to broaden the mind by travelling than watching travel programmes. It is also much more enjoyable.

Aqa Psya3 Interventions for Addiction Notes

Interventions for addiction (Key: – = negative criticism/limitations + = positive criticism/support Biological interventions Methadone for heroin: Heroin addicts are given Methadone, which gives similar effects but is less addictive. Their dose is slowly increased to build up tolerance, then slowly decreased to wean the addict of it until the addict need neither substance. Some people just switch from being heroin addicts to Meth addicts – Statistics show more than 300 methadone related deaths in the UK in 2007 – Methadone consumption is often unsupervised, which has created a black market, where addicts can sell their doses for only ? 2 Potential drug treatments for gambling: not approved in the UK yet, but there is evidence that SSRI’s (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors which increase serotonin= good mood) or Naltrexone (a dopamine receptor antagonist, which reduces the reward of gambling by reducing dopamine) may be effective. Hollander found tha t gamblers treated with SSRI’s showed improvements compared to a control group – BUT Hollander’s study only had 10 participants; a larger, longer study by Blanco et al (32 gamblers over 6 months) showed SSRI was no more effective than a placebo + Kim and Grant showed that naltrexone led to decrease in gambling thoughts and behaviours after 6 weeks of treatment – Intervention bias of doctors: Cohen and Cohen suggest that clinicians don’t believe addictions are too difficult to treat, because they only come across them when the addiction is too advanced to respond to treatment Psychological interventions:Reinforcement: Sindelar did a study with addicts on methadone therapy (+ counselling). One group was rewarded every time they tested negative for drugs. By the end, the reward group had 60% more negative urine tests than the control (who weren’t offered rewards). + Sindelar showed it to be effective at reducing the addictive behaviour – BUT Reinforcement doesn’t address the underlying problems that caused the addiction in the first place, so as soon as the rewards are removed, addicts may just go back to engaging in the same, or another addictive behaviour again (eg an alcoholic may go back to alcohol, or develop an new addiction for sex). The rewards would have to be paid for by the NHS, which is a public service funded by taxes. The general public wouldn’t want their taxes being spent on giving addicts rewards CBT: CBT helps people change the way they think about their addiction and learn ways of coping effectively. (eg. in gambling addiction, the addict has a cognitive error in believing they can influence the outcome of the game, CBT would correct this wrong thinking by showing them that the belief is irrational) + Effective: Ladoceur et al randomly allocated 66 pathological gamblers to either a CBT group or waiting list.At the end, 86% of the treatment group were no longer classed as pathologica l gamblers, and had increased self-efficacy. + ALSO Sylvian et al looked at treatments that targeted both cognition and behaviour. Pathological gamblers were given cognitive therapy, social skills training and relapse prevention, resulting in improvements which were maintained at a 1yr follow-up. Research has tended to show that no psychological treatment to be superior, but that they are most effective when combined with pharmacological treatments. Public health interventions The NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) Study:US government sponsored interventions such as the NIDA Collaborative Cocaine Treatment (CCT) study are designed to intervene in the cycle of drug-related personal and social problems. + The NIDA intervention led to a reduction in cocaine use, and subsequent reductions in related behaviours (eg. unprotected sex, which led to a reduction in HIV transmission) Telephone smoking ‘Quitline’: Stead et al found that smokers who received repeated Quitline c ounselling telephone calls were 50% more likely to quit than a control who only received brief counselling. Has real-world applications: Military personnel deployed overseas often take up, or increase smoking habits. Beckham et al found that combining Quitline services with nicotine replacement therapy was highly effective in treating US military veterans. Prevention of youth gambling: Messerlian et al proposed a prevention model based on research into teenage pathological gambling using denormalisation, protection, prevention and harm reduction principles. (eg. programme based on prevention would include early identification of ‘at risk’ youths, and attempt to avert them from escalating towards pathological gambling. + Public health intervention in gambling is proactive and addresses a potentially devastating social issue. Research shows that problem gambling as a teen can lead to subsequently adverse outcomes, (eg. strained relationships, criminal behaviour, depressio n and even suicide) so early prevention is essential. Math Journaling in the Classroom and Out

Math Journaling in the Classroom and Out Journal writing can be a valuable technique to further develop and enhance your mathematical thinking and communication skills in mathematics. Journal entries in mathematics provide opportunities for individuals to self-assess what theyve learned. When one makes an entry into a math journal, it becomes a record of the experience received from the specific math exercise or problem-solving activity. The individual has to think about what he/she did in order to communicate it in writing; in so doing, one gains some valuable insight and feedback about the mathematical problem-solving process. The math no longer becomes a task whereby the individual simply follows the steps or rules of thumb. When a math journal entry is required as a follow up to the specific learning goal, one actually has to think about what was done and what was required to solve the specific math activity or problem. Math instructors also find that math journaling can be quite effective. When reading through the jour nal entries, a decision can be made to determine if further review is required. When an individual writes a math journal, they must reflect on what they have learned which becomes a great assessment technique for individuals and instructors. If math journals are something new, you will want to use the following strategies to assist the implementation of this valuable writing activity. Procedure A journal should be written at the end of a math exercise.Journal entries should be in a separate book, one used specifically for mathematical thinking.Math journals should contain specific details about the areas of difficulties and areas of success. The math journal entries should take no more than 5-7 minutes.Math journals can be done with children and adults. Younger children will draw pictures of the concrete math problem they have explored.Math journals should not be done daily, its more important to do math journals with new concepts in areas specifically related to growth in mathematical problem-solving.Be patient, math journaling takes time to learn. It is critical to understand that math journaling is an entry of the mathematical thinking processes. Theres no right or wrong way of thinking! Math Journal Prompts to Get You Started I knew I was right when......If I missed____________ I would have to__________________.The thing you have to remember with this kind of problem is........Tips I would give a friend to solve this problem are.........I wish I knew more about......How many times did you try to solve the problem? Biography of James Jim Bowie, American Frontiersman

Biography of James 'Jim' Bowie, American Frontiersman James Jim Bowie (c. 1796–March 6, 1836) was an American frontiersman, slave trader, smuggler, Indian fighter, and soldier in the Texas Revolution. He was among the defenders at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, where he perished along with all of his comrades. Bowie was known as a legendary fighter; the large Bowie knife is named after him. Fast Facts: James Bowie Known For: American frontiersman, military leader during the Texas Revolution, and defender of the AlamoAs Known As: Jim BowieBorn: 1796 in KentuckyParents: Reason and Elve Ap-Catesby Jones BowieDied: March 6, 1836 in San Antonio, Mexican TexasSpouse: Maria Ursula de Veramendi (m. 1831-1833)Children: Marie Elve, James Veramendi Early Life James Bowie was born in Kentucky in 1796 and was raised in present-day Missouri and Louisiana. He enlisted to fight in the War of 1812  but joined too late to see any action. Soon he was back in Louisiana selling timber, and with the proceeds he bought some slaves and expanded his operation. Bowie later became acquainted with Jean Lafitte, the legendary Gulf Coast pirate who was involved in illegal slave smuggling. Bowie and his brothers bought smuggled slaves, declared that they had found them, and kept the money when the slaves were sold at auction. Later, Bowie came up with a scheme for acquiring free land. He falsified French and Spanish documents that said he had purchased the land in Louisiana. The Sandbar Fight On September 19, 1827, Bowie was involved in the legendary â€Å"Sandbar Fight† in Louisiana. Two men- Samuel Levi Wells III and Dr. Thomas Harris Maddox- had agreed to fight a duel, and each man had brought along several supporters. Bowie was there on behalf of Wells. The duel ended after both men shot and missed twice, and they had decided to let the matter drop, but a brawl soon broke out among the other men. Bowie fought viciously in spite of being shot at least three times and stabbed with a sword-cane. The wounded Bowie killed one of his opponents with a massive knife, which later became famous as the â€Å"Bowie knife.† Move to Texas Like many frontiersmen of the time, Bowie eventually became intrigued by the idea of Texas. He went there and found plenty to keep him busy, including another land speculation scheme and the charms of Ursula Veramendi, the well-connected daughter of the mayor of San Antonio. By 1830 Bowie had moved to Texas, staying one step ahead of his creditors back in Louisiana. After fighting off a vicious Tawakoni Indian attack while searching for a silver mine, Bowie won even more fame as a tough frontiersman. He married Veramendi in 1831 and took up residence in San Antonio. She would soon die tragically of cholera, along with her parents. Action in Nacogdoches After disgruntled Texans attacked Nacogdoches in August of 1832 (they were protesting a Mexican order to give up their arms), Stephen F. Austin asked Bowie to intervene. Bowie arrived in time to capture some fleeing Mexican soldiers. This made Bowie a hero to those Texans who favored independence, although it is not necessarily what Bowie intended, as he had a Mexican wife and a lot of money in land in Mexican Texas. In 1835, war broke out between rebellious Texans and the Mexican army. Bowie went to Nacogdoches, where he and Sam Houston were elected leaders of the local militia. He acted quickly, arming the men with weapons seized from the local Mexican armory. Assault on San Antonio Bowie and other volunteers from Nacogdoches caught up with a rag-tag army led by Stephen F. Austin and James Fannin. The troops were marching on San Antonio, hoping to defeat Mexican General Martà n Perfecto de Cos and end the conflict quickly. In late October 1835, they laid siege to San Antonio, where Bowies contacts among the population proved extremely beneficial. Many residents of San Antonio joined the rebels, bringing valuable intelligence with them. Bowie and Fannin and some 90 men dug in on the grounds of Concepcià ³n Mission just outside the city, and General Cos, spotting them there, attacked. The Battle of Concepcià ³n and the Capture of San Antonio Bowie told his men to keep their heads and stay low. When the Mexican infantry advanced, the Texans devastated their ranks with fire from their long rifles. The Texan sharpshooters also picked off artillerymen who were shooting the Mexican cannons. Disheartened, the Mexicans fled back to San Antonio. Bowie was once again hailed a hero. He was not there when Texan rebels stormed the city in the early days of December 1835, but he returned shortly after. General Sam Houston ordered him to demolish the Alamo, a fortress-like old mission in San Antonio, and a retreat from the city. Bowie, once again, disobeyed orders. Instead, he mounted a defense and fortified the Alamo. Bowie, Travis, and Crockett In early February, William Travis arrived in San Antonio. He would take over nominal command of the forces there when the ranking officer left. Many of the men there were not enlisted- they were volunteers, which meant that they answered to no one. Bowie was the unofficial leader of these volunteers and he did not care for Travis, which made things tense at the fort. Soon, however, famous frontiersman Davy Crockett arrived. A skilled politician, Crockett was able to defuse the tension between Travis and Bowie. The Mexican Army, commanded by Mexican General Santa Anna, showed up in late February. The arrival of this common enemy also united the defenders of the Alamo. Battle of the Alamo and Death Bowie became very ill sometime in late February 1836. Historians disagree about what illness he suffered from. It may have been pneumonia or tuberculosis. In any case, it was a debilitating illness, and Bowie was confined, delirious, to his bed. According to legend, Travis drew a line in the sand and told the men to cross it if they would stay and fight. Bowie, too weak to walk, asked to be carried over the line. After two weeks of siege, the Mexicans attacked the morning of March 6. The Alamo was overrun in less than two hours, and all of the defenders were captured or killed, including Bowie, who reportedly died in his bed, still feverish. Legacy Bowie was an interesting man in his time, a renowned hothead, brawler, and troublemaker who went to Texas to escape his creditors in the United States. He became famous due to his fights and his legendary knife, and once fighting broke out in Texas, he soon became known as a solid leader of men who could keep a cool head under fire. His lasting fame, however, came about as a result of his presence at the fateful Battle of the Alamo. In life, he was a con man and slave trader. In death, he became a great hero, and today he is widely revered in Texas, even more so than his brothers-in-arms Travis and Crockett. The city of Bowie and Bowie County, both in Texas, are named after him, as are countless schools, businesses, and parks. Sources Brands, H.W. Jim brown - Essay Example Simons Island. Jim was excellent by all means as a school boy; he was unparalleled in football, baseball and track and field events. Perhaps it was the legacy of his father’s might as a profession al boxer. Apart from references of his excellence as an actor, this article covers specific features and traits of James as America’s all-time greatest professional athlete and the best known professional footballer ever. He was always singled out as the best performer of each event he participated, and especially in basket ball and lacrosse, he was a dread in the minds of opponent teams for the fact that he could win the matches single handedly. Jim’s athletic skills were excellent as he always produced invincible energy to turn the matches to his side’s benefit without so many struggles as others usually had. Stamina and enthusiasm were the key factors he had learned to possess at a very young age. Jim’s records are evidences of his unchallenged dominance over the game zones during his years as a student at both the school and the university. James’ efforts were fruitful as he was committed to his games and practiced them with absolute dedication. James was a finding of his university indeed. His successful sessions in football had entered him the notice of Cleveland Browns and he was taken to the team to play professional football in 1956. He marked envious success at the feats and exited NFL as the record holder

Research proposal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 6

Research proposal - Essay Example As technology continues to advance one thing that can never be disputed is the fact that social networks affects more than just the social aspects of human beings. Teenagers are in most cases known to be one of the most influenced groups by social networks such as Facebook. One thing that is certain is the fact that teenagers use Facebook has both positive and negative effect to how they relate with each other in educational institutions and how they undertake educational activities. Researchers have proved that a good number of teenagers use Facebook to interact with their peer. The use of Facebook and other forms of social media causes a permanent social connection that never used to exist before the introduction of such technology. In the past children used to bid each other farewell at school or any other place they met like playing grounds. When they got home, they used to focus on the other aspects of life apart from the social one. The problem is that with Facebook, teenagers are able to stay connected almost throughout. The connectivity can either build or destroy their education depending on how they use it. The methods that are going to be used for this research include observation, interviews, and questionnaires (Denscombe, 2012). Observation is going to be important in giving the researchers firsthand information on how students’ interactions and behaviors in learning institutions have been influenced by Facebook. Interviews will collect information on the opinion of the student’s and other stakeholders in the education sector on the changes brought about by the use of Facebook by students (Vakkari, Pennanen & Serola, 2003). The questionnaires will seek information on the experiences that the students have had as a result of using Facebook and how it affects their education (Punch, 2006). Due to the nature of the research and the nature of the data collection methods that will be used this research will most likely take a
